Nashville, Tennessee, is known as the nation’s music city thanks to establishments like the Grand Ole Opry and the Country Music Hall of Fame. However, there’s plenty more that this great city has to offer that has nothing to do with country music. Here are four things to do in Nashville if you don’t like country music.
Visit the Frist Art Museum
The Frist Center for Visual Arts offers visitors a chance to view the works of some of the most famous artists in the world as well as up-and-coming locals. This building was the home of the city’s post office many years ago, but has been transformed into a huge space featuring beautiful and ever-changing exhibitions. You’ll see classics by artists like Goya and Kandinsky plus new and edgy modern installations. No matter when you go, you’re sure to have an exciting experience.
Open seven days a week, the Frist is easy to fit into a busy schedule, whether you’re passing through the city or a long-time resident. Make a day of your visit and enjoy a meal at their cafe. There you’ll find fresh options, mouth-watering baked goods, and a selection of wine and beer.
Enjoy a Spectacular Meal
You’ll find plenty of places to enjoy a great meal in Nashville. The restaurant scene here is booming with new places popping up all over. No matter what type of cuisine you prefer, you’re sure to find a spot you’ll love. With classic places like The Catbird Seat, featuring a U-shaped open kitchen and eclectic tasting menu, and the newly opened Henrietta Red, an upscale oyster bar, there’s something for everyone.
If you need a place for a quick bite, Nashville also offers many places to grab a fast and casual meal that’s still unique. Enjoy some classic southern dishes like hot chicken at Hattie B’s or a mouth-watering burger at Hugh Baby’s. Stop in at Slim & Husky’s for an unforgettable slice of pizza.
Tour a Brewery
If you’re a craft brew lover, you’re in for a treat. Nashville has dozens of brand-new breweries all surrounding the downtown district. Enjoy a tour of a brewery and take a growler of your choice home for later enjoyment, or head to one of the many taprooms in the area to try out what each brewery has to offer.
Some great options include Yazoo Brewing Company, Tennessee Brew Works, and Jackalope Brewing Company. Many of these breweries share a building with their tap house and even offer great food and live music. Check out Little Harpeth Brewing Company to see local artists perform and enjoy fun events like Battle Bingo nights.
Take in the City’s Rich History
Nashville played a major role in the American Civil War. If you’re interested in American history, you’ll have some great spots to learn and take in some of the darkest parts of our nation’s history. The Tennessee State Museum features exhibits of the weapons and uniforms worn by Civil War soldiers. You can also tour an Antebellum plantation home at the Belle Meade Plantation for a bit of pre-war history.
Whatever your interests or hobbies, Nashville has something great for you. You don’t need to like country music to get the most out of this city.
